General Training FAQs
What course level should I choose?
We offer Boating 101 for beginners, 201 for intermediate skills, and specialized Charter Captain Training for professionals. If you're unsure, our instructors can assess your level during an intro session.
Can I use my own boat?
Yes! We specialize in private hands-on boat training on your own vessel. Learning the specific handling of your boat is the best way to build lasting confidence.
What is hands-on training?
Instead of just classroom theory, our training happens entirely on the water. You will be at the helm, practicing maneuvers, docking, and safety procedures under expert guidance.
Scheduling & Logistics
To book your session, please submit your course selection and boat details through our online training request form. Once submitted, our team will review your information and email a formal confirmation within 24 hours to secure your date.
We require at least 48 hours' notice for rescheduling. This allows us to reassign our instructors to other students. Rescheduling requests made within 48 hours may be subject to a nominal fee depending on current demand.
Cancellations made more than 72 hours before the start time are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made between 72 and 24 hours will receive a 50% credit. Same-day cancellations are non-refundable.
Yes, we provide special rates for students who choose our comprehensive training paths (e.g., combining Boating 101 and 201). These can be bundled during the initial inquiry phase for significant savings.
Do you want your family to be trained together? Yes you can. In the training request form there is a space to add additional students at a rate of $199 per person with a max of 4 students per class.
Need extra training time. Usually, if the captain doesn't have another training immediatly following your class, we can offer you extra time at $100 per hour.

- Minimum age of 16 with parental consent.
- No prior experience required for level 101.
- Basic physical agility for boarding vessels.
- Valid government ID required at check-in.
Licensing & Certs
- State boating safety certificate
- Logbook for hour verification.
- Advanced courses require Level 1 completion.
- NASBLA approved materials provided.
What to Pack
- Non-marking deck shoes or sneakers.
- Weather-appropriate layered clothing.
- Polarized sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Hydration and light snacks.
Life Jackets & Safety Practices
Safety is our absolute priority at Total Marine Academy. We provide U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all students, tailored to various sizes and weights. Before every session, your instructor will conduct a comprehensive safety briefing covering vessel stability, emergency communication, and the proper use of all safety equipment onboard. We strictly adhere to all maritime safety protocols to ensure a secure learning environment.
Weather Policy & Gear
We monitor weather conditions closely. Sessions are rescheduled in the event of Small Craft Advisories, lightning, or heavy rain that compromises safety. Beyond safety equipment, we provide all necessary training materials, including charts, navigation tools, and logbooks. We recommend students bring sunscreen, non-slip footwear, and a light jacket. All technical equipment required for your specific course level is provided and maintained to professional standards.
