General Boat Training
Do I need to own a boat to train with you?
Most of our training is conducted on customer-owned boats so you can learn on the vessel you’ll actually be operating. In some cases, training may be available on an instructor’s boat when appropriate. Contact us to discuss your situation and options.
Do you teach complete beginners?
Yes. Many of our students are brand new boat owners or have very limited experience. We start with the basics and build your skills step by step so you feel more confident and in control.
Can you help me learn to dock?
Absolutely. Docking and low-speed maneuvering are some of the most common skills boaters want help with. Our docking lessons focus on approaches, departures, close-quarters handling and understanding how wind and current affect your boat.
Do you offer boat driving lessons for teenagers?
Yes. Teen Boat Driver Academy provides supervised, hands-on training for eligible teens. This program focuses on practical boat handling, safety and responsible operation. It does not replace any state-required boater education or licensing.
Scheduling & Logistics
How do I request a training session and what is the booking process?
You can request a session by completing our online training request form or using the Book Now options on the site. We’ll follow up to confirm details, availability and pricing before finalizing your booking.
Where does training take place?
Hands-on training currently takes place on Lake Travis and Lake Austin in the Austin, Texas area. Training is typically conducted on your own boat at agreed-upon marinas or docks.
What happens if there is bad weather or unsafe conditions?
Safety is our top priority. If conditions such as severe storms, lightning or unsafe winds are expected, we will work with you to reschedule your session. We’ll review our weather and cancellation guidelines with you when you book.
Student Requirements
Who can participate in training?
- We welcome adult students of all experience levels. Some lessons may be appropriate for responsible teens when accompanied by a parent or guardian. We’ll discuss age, experience and any physical considerations when you schedule.
Do I need a boater education certificate?
- Boater education and licensing requirements vary by state and may change over time. We recommend checking your state’s current regulations. Our training focuses on practical, hands-on boat handling and does not issue official licenses or certifications.
What should I wear and bring?
- Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and non-slip footwear suitable for a day on the water. Bring any required safety gear, sun protection, water and anything else you’d normally have on board for a typical outing.
Does Teen Boat Driver Academy provide the Texas boater education certificate?
No. Teen Boat Driver Academy focuses on practical, on-the-water training and does not issue state boater education certificates. Students should complete any required online or classroom courses separately to meet Texas or other state requirements.
Can my teen learn on our family’s boat?
In many cases, training may be available aboard an appropriate family-owned boat, provided it meets safety and suitability guidelines. We’ll review your boat and situation with you before confirming.
Does completing the course mean my teen can operate any boat without restrictions?
No. Completing our training does not override state age, licensing or supervision requirements. Parents and students are responsible for following all applicable laws and regulations.
Can a parent participate in the training?
Parent involvement may be encouraged, particularly for teen training. We’ll discuss the best way for parents to observe or participate when we plan the session.
Safety Standards & Equipment
What safety gear is used during training and who provides it? We’ll review your boat’s existing safety equipment and may recommend additional items if needed. Students are responsible for ensuring their boat meets local safety requirements. We follow safety best practices during all on-water sessions.
Weather & Conditions
What happens if there is bad weather? Your instructor will monitor conditions and may adjust, pause or reschedule training if conditions become unsafe. We’ll always prioritize safety over completing a specific lesson plan.
